NGĀ TAI TŪĀTEA A TARAIKA

Our name translates to “The Splashing Waves of Taraika”. Our name is a spiritual connection to Te Whanganui a Tara, the great harbour of Wellington, and to Tara or Taraika, the paramount Chief of Te Atiawa Taranaki Whanui Iwi.

We are very humbled by and grateful to Te Atiawa leader Kura Moeahu for gifting us with this privilege and the responsibility our swim club now carries. To carry this honour means we are tikanga based and focused on whakawhānaungatanga.

We are not just a performance swim club, we are a hub of water competency. We believe that strong swimming is the best defence against drowning risks in Wellington and the wider Aotearoa.

We strive for water competency from all our members, first in the pool and then in the open water. To this we are supported by Water Safety New Zealand as a hub for water safety programs in Te-Whanganui-a-Tara.

Athletes Matter

Excellence is the Pursuit

One Big Whanau

Our club is athlete-focused, coach-driven, and volunteer supported. Our club's aim is to be inclusive of all swimmers, with the team's pursuit of excellence as the overarching goal.  We want athletes to recognise their own potential, then to take aim to fulfil it.

Our club environment is based around manaakitanga, no one is left behind.
